The process of Inspiration is a process. Inspiration is the nexus of creativity. But what do you do when you are blocked, stuck and frustrated? You have a project deadline or an important writing piece and the inspiration is not flowing. I am often asked what inspires me or how can I get more inspired. Sometimes it’s not easy to be creative. Let’s take a look at some of the co-factors I feel are involved in this process.
I hear many people talk about being inspired and inspiration and how to be creative but rarely do I hear them talk about a few aspects that are the precursors behind the scenes. The question has become what is the process of inspiration? How can someone be creative even though they aren’t feeling so creative in the moment?
Inspiration will "come to you," once You Create "It" ~ Lori Moreno
Many times inspiration and creativity are immediate and spontaneous. Other times it can be challenging and in those times I ask myself a series questions.
The first and most important factor for me has always been: environment.
The process of Inspiration - One of the most important thing’s I have found is that my environment and people I surround myself with play an essential part. Take a walk. Go to the beach and watch the boats come in and out. Get back to nature and experience the amazing simplicity and harmony in which everything in nature coexsists.
Stimulate your mind - invigorate your senses.
Ask yourself some simple questions.
What is my desired affect that I wish to impart on my audience?
What is my overall vision?
The basic definition of inspiration is to breath in. Everyday and with everything we do we breath in the world the around us. In order for this inspiration to take affect you have to have a focus and direction. Otherwise it will go nowhere. If we’ve been inspired it’s because we’ve had a specific focus or direction on something that we are inspired about. By being focused and having a direction we allow inspiration to happen. Sometimes it almost seems magical.
An example, Michelangelo wanted to represent the creation of man in the Sistine Chapel. He kept breathing in and out the world around him looking to discover a way to depict the Creation of Man. At some point he experienced his inspiration. His inspiration is what we see on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel today.
The process of Inspiration - Here are a couple important things to note: 1) Michelangelo’s inspiration kept him painting the ceiling through all of the tremendous trials, tribulations and challenges that he faced to finish the work. It wasn’t an easy job but he had the inspiration to complete it in his mind and in his heart. His inspiration was a discovery for him – it was a whole new way of looking at things so he could present his work with his own creative voice; 2) Secondly his inspiration touches all of us as we see it and it inspires us. It becomes inspirational – a by product of inspiration. This amazing inspiration can become exponential!
The process of Inspiration – Don’t give up, give it a focus! Discover what do you want to be inspired about and how do you want to inspire others? You give it a focus and then you remain open as you breath in and out the world around you so that you can discover the worlds of inspiration that dwell within YOU!
